Why do people apply for postions for which they have zero qualifications?Views: 919

My question may actually be prompted by the kind of day I'm having, but since this is a phenomenon we've all encountered I thought I'd toss it out for discussion.

Why do people go to the time and trouble to apply for jobs for which they are clearly unqualified? When a job posting says quite explicitly that, for example "5-10 years project management of SAP BW/BI/DW implementations", and the applicant has been a line supervisor at an aircraft maintenance facility, why on earth would they apply? When a posting stipulates "CPA and a minimum 7 years public accounting and audit experience", and the applicant is right out of school and has only been working at the campus bookstore, why would they apply? (These are both real examples I've run across, BTW)

Any thoughts on this?

Dear Tom,

A very good question asked.

Before answering the same, let me ask one more question,

why it is so that for a particular requirement mass mail to people are being sent, of which 90% just donot have the skills or the qualifications in first place --- probable answers could be
1. To unearth hidden talents, not seen in the CV.

2. To spread the word of mouth for the post they are trying to fill in - again to get the best.

Answers to you question:
1. Possibly to get their CV in the eyes of the company/HR consultant.
2. Self advertising, possibly to get landed in the place/position they look for.

Believe me try to post your own CV, on any damn jobsite, set the job matching criteria to auto - you will get to see openings you won't even thought of in dreams.

Besides leave apart independent agencies, even the company's HR are sending their requirement to people no where matching the requirement or having skill.

With due regards to the every one out their in world looking out for the best.

Note: Had qualifications, experience in no. of years, been the criteria, we won't have seen the best of innovations and entrepreneurs.

My thinking is that under qualified people apply for these jobs for one of three reasons:

1) in the hopes that you can't find the right candidate and will lower your standards

2) that they're firing resumes at everything (the shotgun approach) and hoping they hit something

3) in Canada, if you are collecting Unemployment Insurance, you are required to be actively looking for work. Shooting for jobs you're not qualified for means you get to keep receiving your bi-weekly check from the government and have little likelihood of being cut off because they're actively looking for work.

There is also one more possibility. Some workers have been brought up being spoon-fed everything. They've never had to work for anything and have an entitlement attitude. They don't feel they need to do the work nor pay their dues to become experienced enough to be considered qualified. They should just have the job handed to them.

And in this economy, you'll find a whole lot more people applying for jobs they have no right applying for. Why? Because anything will do.

There is also a segment of the workforce who have their heads in the clouds. When they apply for a position they are clearly not qualified for, they justify it to themselves with, "Really, how hard could it be?"

Um, yeah right.

One more answer: The internet makes it too easy to send resumes out, so why not? Again that shotgun approach.

Also, right now there are so many people out of work that they will take any opportunity to find something - even if it's over-reaching.
