Karen
Hi thanks for visiting my post.

My name is Karen. I recently moved from London to India. I am a double post-graduate (Economics and HR). I completed my MS in HR through the University of London. I worked for a global leader in telecommunications when in London for the Global Inclusion Platform. During my stint with this particular organisation, I found myself being very partial and drawn to Global Inclusion, CSR, Employee Well-being; and Training and Development.

I’ve been in India for almost 3 months now, and unfortunately haven’t been able to score a job yet. I am open to taking up jobs as a trainee (due to lack of experience in hands on HR ing), but companies seem to have reservations when it comes to employing me, because of my experience in London. This has surprised me a little, and many others who know me. We actually thought that I would really not have a problem getting a placement due to my work experiences so far, which have been with really good organisations (touch wood). I have decided not to compromise on the field I want to enter, so HR it is…

When I was back from London, I was also very fired up. I wanted to do something to make a difference and was all geared up to work – in its real sense. Well, unfortunately I haven’t started yet…

Recently, I was approached by family, and was asked to think about starting an HR consultancy, and requested to make a kind of a presentation regarding requirements. Though interesting, the idea does seem a bit daunting and scary, as I don’t seem to know where to start. I have no prior business experience, and no hard-core HRing experience. Phew…

I would really appreciate it if someone could be my adviser and guide. I am looking for a mentor, someone I might be able to turn to, who might be able to help me see exactly what I’m getting myself into, what I should be looking to do, etc.

If I do go ahead with this project, I want it to be extremely successful (like I’m sure everyone else who wants to start a business does). My basic intention behind whatever function I do choose to go ahead with would be to help people (I’m no saying the remuneration isn’t important).

I would really appreciate some help and advise.

Hi! Karen,

First I would like to congratulate your friends who advised you to start on your consultancy. Since you have mentioned that you like doing training, why not start a consultancy which offers training as well as recruitment?

Your Requirement: Good Contacts, an office space and good team of Sales People to market your service.

Think of all these, write down your strengths and find out where you need to improve. If you do these, I think you'll get a clear picture as to where you have to head to.

I have written based on your postings. If you still require clarification, please message me.

Warm Regards,
Jyothi

Dear Karen

I dont know if I can be your mentor, but I can definitely share my expriences. I started my own HR Services company in Gurgaon , an year back and its been a challenging but satisfying journey.

Jyoti has given you good suggestions, but I would say, in addition, a good execution skill would be crucial to success.

A good understanding of the Job Portals, a capability to network and work effectively with references and an inherent understanding of business processes, which helps you to get a deeper grasp of the client requirements, will all play a part in your success.

Do stay in touch and we can exchange notes.

Warm Regards

Karen,

I would like to add my 2 cents.

Some basics....

1. List down areas where you have complete knowledge on
2. Areas which you would like to build your business in
3. Check with Friends / Family, who asked to start on your own, on how they can help you in getting started. Read Business Contacts.

Once you have answers to the above then you should worry about Finances, Office, Sales Staff etc.

If you are successful with the initial contacts then you can use their contacts to land you more business.

I hope I have answered some of your questions. In case you need more clarity on the above then let me know.

Will be glad to share my experiences.

Best Luck.

Well! most of them did cover the basic topics and to check your strength area etc.
I have a following suggestion:
1. As your part of Delhi NCR,as you have done work on CSR,
if you are keen to pursue the same, then do go and
contact DRDA(District Rural Development Agency) this a
quasi Govt organisation, that helps all the SHG(self help
group)and other weaker members in the villages. They get
funds from the MLA's and MP who use this organisation to
spend their funds for the welfare of the village.
2. Before you go there you need to prepare the area that
you want to be let us begin say " training of ladies(
why ladies as they are the one's involved in the SHG
programmes across the country) on soft skills, like handl
ing of the Front office work or Hospitality Industry.

3. To do this training you need to do your home work and
have a tie up with all the 3start and 4star hotels in
your city and neighbouring.(need not be firm tie up,
but one who is willing to look at the trained people)

4. To Go back to point 1, once you are prepared meet the
officials tell them that you will provide training to
a batch of 20 women, place you can do that in one of
the training hall in the DRDA or the village that you
plan do this at free of cost, as DRDA will pay for the
women bata and travel charges for getting trained. Then
do a complete training say hospitality Industry ie.
housekeeping then ask the Hotel's to come and select
from the first lot, ensure you get a small fees to start
off from these HOTEL.
this way one can kick off, then once the DRDA see results
they will start paying from the 2nd or 3rd batch.
Some of them can be deputed to office maintenance or residential work etc, you can find lots of avenue to depute these trained people.
One thing should be clear you should be able to pursue with full passion and motivate your self as much as possible, as you will face failures but if your home work
is correct and approach, then success will follow you.
ALL the best!
in case you have more clarification please do let me know
thanks!
